In Thailand, the colour green is traditionally associated with good fortune, wealth, prosperity, and abundance. Locals often use the term “Khaew Niao” (literally meaning “green pull”) to describe the strong magnetic quality of the colour green in attracting fortune and prosperity.
Why am I sharing this? Because today I am introducing Wat Phraya Suren’s Somdej, a highly revered amulet known as “Somdej Khaew Niao Jing.” This name signifies that the amulet is not merely symbolic, but genuinely powerful and resilient. It is a title given by Thai collectors in recognition of this batch’s exceptional potency and the many miraculous experiences attributed to it.
LP Thong Wat Rajayotha was a junior contemporary of Somdej Toh, and both studied under the same teacher, LP Saeng of Wat Manichulakhan. LP Thong maintained close friendships and regularly exchanged knowledge with many legendary masters, including LP Ngern of Wat Bang Klan (Top 9), LP Suk of Wat Plak Khong Makham Tao (Top 9), and LP Eiam of Wat Nang, among others.
Later, numerous renowned historical masters sought him out to learn from him and became his disciples. These included LP Jong of Wat Na Tang Nok, Phor Than Klai of Wat Suan Khan, LP Sodh of Wat Pak Nam, and LP Ee of Wat Sattahip. Remarkably, LP Thong was also the only monk ever permitted to board an airplane to sprinkle holy water in a nationwide blessing.
The batch of amulets featured here was created by LP Thong at Wat Phraya Suren in BE 2451. The origin of this series is truly extraordinary. LP Thong spent twenty years on its creation, beginning in BE 2431, with the entire moulding process only completed in BE 2451.
The story began with Archan Phandi, who intended to construct a temple. According to traditional Thai customs, sacred objects must be placed inside a stupa during temple construction. As a result, Archan Phandi initiated the creation of these amulets to be enshrined within the stupa, giving rise to this legendary batch.
LP Thong did not merely assist his disciple—he devoted himself entirely to the project. He produced five different pims, totalling 84,000 amulets, and personally pressed every single piece. This immense dedication explains why the process took two decades. The sacred materials prepared by LP Thong are regarded as among the most energetically powerful in history. Because of this, Archan Phandi not only requested LP Thong to prepare the materials, but also asked him to personally hand-write sacred symbols on nearly every amulet face—an extraordinarily demanding task requiring exceptional perseverance and spiritual discipline.
So where how did the name of Somdej Khaew Niao Jin arise? The stupa was first opened in BE 2485, during a period of major warfare. At that time, these sacred amulets were distributed to soldiers. It was said that all who carried them returned safely and victorious, which quickly brought the amulets widespread fame. Many soldiers later testified that they were able to overcome their enemies under the amulet’s protection, likening it to an invincible bell guarding them on the battlefield.
The stupa was opened a second time in BE 2512, and the amulets were distributed to residents and devotees. Following this, numerous accounts emerged of improved livelihoods, business success, and increased prosperity. As a result, this series is widely believed to possess powerful “Metta Maha Lap” qualities—enhancing popularity, wealth, and business fortune. This Somdej is truly a timeless masterpiece and a classic of Thai amulet history.
