What is Nur Tapu Sangkhawannon, and why are so few pieces made—rarer even than pure gold?
Nur Tapu Sangkhawannon refers to ancient nails originally crafted from a tin-based alloy, which may also include elements such as zinc, lead, or mercury. These nails were used to fasten wooden structures, particularly in the construction of temples and palaces. During the Ayutthaya period, conventional nails or screws did not exist, so green tin was melted and cast into round or square rods with pointed ends, known as Sangkhawannon nails.
These nails played a vital role in anchoring sacred structures and permanent fixtures within temples. Over centuries, they were continuously exposed to religious rituals, including daily prayers and consecration ceremonies conducted by resident abbots. As a result, the nails absorbed significant spiritual energy.
When temples eventually deteriorated or collapsed, knowledgeable ancient masters recognized the spiritual value of these Sangkhawannon nails. Having endured the test of time and been blessed through countless rituals, the nails were believed to be infused with potent Buddhist powers. Thus, they were collected and melted down to be mixed into the creation of sacred metal Buddha amulets.
Their spiritual potency also made them a favored material for crafting protective talismans such as magic knives or other ritual tools. Traditionally, it was considered inappropriate to bring raw temple materials directly into the home. Instead, they had to be transformed—most commonly into Buddha amulets—before being kept for personal reverence.
Because of their deep spiritual significance and limited availability, genuine pieces made from Nur Tapu Sangkhawannon are extremely rare and valued.
