This batch of amulets was created at Wat Chana Songkhram, a temple that will be familiar to many senior and experienced collectors. The temple is particularly renowned for its Somdej amulets created during the BE2360s, during the reign of King Rama III. These amulets were created to commemorate auspicious victories in battle and are traditionally associated with blessings for overcoming difficulties, removing obstacles, and allowing one’s endeavours to progress smoothly.
Throughout the temple’s history, its sacred crypts were opened only on auspicious occasions, allowing important amulets preserved within to be retrieved.
In BE2491, Phra Kru Udomchai gathered sacred powders and materials from renowned and highly respected masters throughout Thailand. The mixture included powdered fragments from various ancient amulets, sacred flowers collected from the altar before the principal Buddha image inside the temple’s ordination hall, as well as sacred materials originating from the temple’s first crypt opening—including fragments from the historic BE2360s collection.
Other important ingredients included Wat Rakhang sacred powder and Bang Khun Phrom powder. LP Toh Wat Pradoochimplee also contributed old sacred materials from his earlier and most prosperous period, which were incorporated into the mixture used to create this batch.
The production process itself was carried out with great discipline and respect. Monks and novices assisted in mixing and grinding the sacred powders and moulding the amulets. Everyone involved was strictly forbidden from joking around or using disrespectful language during the process. Instead, they were instructed to maintain a calm and meditative state of mind, continuously reciting prayers and dedicating their efforts as an offering to the Buddha.
Even the water used to mould the amulets was specially selected. Only sacred holy water was used, including what was described as “hundred-year-old holy water” preserved inside the ordination hall before the principal Buddha image, together with holy water obtained from the Grand Palace and various important temples. These sacred waters were combined with the collected powders before the amulets were moulded.
Upon completion, the amulets underwent an extensive three-month consecration period. A total of 108 highly respected and accomplished monks from different regions throughout Thailand were invited to participate in the blessing and consecration ceremonies, completing what became an exceptionally meaningful and sacred batch of amulets.
Among the masters who participated were:
LP Nak Wat Rakhang
LP Jong Wat Na Tang Nok
LP Jad Wat Bang Krabao
LP Jai Wat Sadet
LP Rung Wat Tha Krabue
LP Ngern Wat Don Yai Hom
LP Toh Wat Pradoochimplee
LP Tae Wat Sam Ngam
LP Opsai Bangmod Ashram
LP Pae Wat Phikulthong
LP Hom Wat Chak Mak
LP Nai Wat Ban Chaeng, among many others.
What makes this ceremony particularly remarkable is that many of these masters are today regarded as legendary figures in their own right, with collectors specifically seeking amulets blessed or created by each individual master. Having so many of them gathered together to participate in the consecration of a single batch makes this ceremony especially significant from both a spiritual and historical perspective.
